The development of a large-bore repeating rifle resumed again in 1873 and 1874, Using receivers based upon the Model 1868 frame, development of a large-bore repeating rifle began in 1873 and after some refinements, prototypes were presented to the public at the 1876 International Exhibition in Philadelphia. Because this public debut occurred on the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the new Winchester Model 1876 was named the Centennial Rifle.
This exquisite example of a Model 1876, made in 1880, is caliber 45-60 with a 26 inch octagonal barrel, frosty bore, good rifling, and deluxe walnut stock checkered at wrist and forearm. The butt stock is burled with a trap in the crescent butt plate. The gun possesses a Winchester factory tang sight in addition to the original front and rear barrel sight. The barrel and magazine tube has been cut to 26 inches, and approximately 30% blue remains on barrel. Serial number 14447.
