These .54 caliber percussion breechloaders were designed by General Ambrose E. Burnside and manufactured by Burnside Rifle Co., Providence, Rhode Island. Gen. Burnside was an official in the company before the war but was not involved in wartime development of the weapon. The Burnside carbine employed an unusual cone shaped metal cartridge for use in a percussion system.

This attractive example has strong cartouche and rifling in bore. (1861 and MNG) carved into right butt stock and (HT over W) on left butt stock. Fullly functional action. Serial number 7449.
