This .54 caliber percussion was designed by General Ambrose E. Burnside and manufactured by Burnside Rifle Co., Providence, Rhode Island. Gen. Burnside was an official in the company before the war but was not involved in wartime development of the weapon. The Burnside carbine employed an unusual cone shaped metal cartridge for use in a percussion system.

This example is 1 inch bore with a 21 inch round barrel showing some pitting but strong rifling. Metal turning brown. Wood exhibits many scratches and dents along with a 4 inch crack at the lower butt stock, from the butt plate forward. Serial number 23623. Please contact us to purchase.
