Beautiful two barreled .22 caliber Flobert system pistol with two separate hammers and two triggers. Flobert, a Frenchman, developed an early breech loading system for his .22 rimfire cartridge. Perhaps he had early failures of ignition in his pistols, as he did not trust the primer to ignite with a hit from the hammer on just a single spot on the rim. He designed his hammers to strike with a solid bar across the entire base of the cartridge thus providing two different spots that could ignite on opposite sides of the rim. He also evidently believed that the hammers would have to hit with considerable force, as all of his pistols have extremely strong hammer grips.
The two triggers each have a dual purpose. One is a corkscrew, and the other is an awl, to be used to screw into a door frame so that the pistol could be used as an alarm gun if the door was forced open. Centered between the two barrels is a spring-activated dirk of a very unusual and decorative style. It has fluted scalloping on both edges. There are also three grooves milled into the blade on both sides. This work is very decorative, and nearly unknown in knife pistols. The front strap of the frame has a compartment with a hinged lid to hold spare cartridges. The only marking on this piece is a winged figure, possibly a trademark or family crest, engraved just above the lid. The gun is finished with beautiful bone grips, and some nice carving on the hammers.
